Content marketing is a fairly recent development in the world of internet marketing. Essentially is can be defined as the creation and sharing of content in order to engage current and potential consumer bases. Internet marketing has gone through some changes since it's inception. Long gone are the days of "build it and they will come" (If indeed that was ever true.)

Let's start from the customer's (consumer) point of view. Every customer has their own unique mix of interests. When we investigate a product or service one of the first tools used today is the internet. Online search tools such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing help us find information. Just type in what you are looking for and you get a list of webpages with (hopefully) relevant content. First we scan the results and click on the closest match. Then as we read the page we make a judgement of the content of the webpage. If the information is helpful, then we are likely to look at other pages within that website for more information. If the information is not helpful, we continue to search.
This is great news for business and service providers who know their product well and can communicate their knowlege to the reader. It draws potential customers to your site. The main goal of content marketing technique is to attract attention to your website. It bypasses the natural instinct to resist being sold because in this important first step you aren't selling anything. What you are doing is establishing a relationship and building credibility.
As an aside, let me say a few words about Content farms. Because content marketing is such a powerful way to attract visitors to websites, like anything there are people and businesses who exploit the system. You may have experienced this yourself. Have you ever looked up something only to find the same article, well-written but lacking in substance, on more than one website?
